
A performer on modern piano and hammerklavier, Eva Mengelkoch’s artistry has been described as “formidable on both instruments, technically brilliant, and poetically distinctive.” (Early Music America). Her world-premiere recording of “Songs for Lena” by Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy” with Julianne Baird and Ryan de Ryke was released by NAXOS and received internationally to rave reviews. Opera Nederland named it “CD of the Month” in November 2021.
Eva Mengelkoch has concertized in chamber music ensembles, as a solo recitalist and accompanist in North America, Central America, India, and throughout Western and Central Europe. She has appeared in concert venues including Saint-Martin-in-the-Fields (London), Mendelssohn-Haus (Leipzig), Humboldt-Saal (Berlin), Tata-Theatre (Mumbai), Liszt-Academy (Budapest), Chicago’s Cultural Center, Bayreuth’s Summer Piano Festival, and Teatro Nacional in Managua. Her recordings have been released by Naxos, Centaur, and Beoton, and continue to be broadcast on public radio stations in the US and abroad.
A champion of Lieder and song repertory, she frequently collaborates with Julianne Baird, Ryan de Ryke, and Monica Szabo-Nyeste. In honor of Albrecht Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s 150th birthday anniversary in October 2024, Eva Mengelkoch and tenor Michael Mogl performed a series of recitals in Italy, and in venues important to the Mendelssohn family in Germany and Switzerland.
As a scholar, Eva Mengelkoch has presented at the American Musicological Society Annual Meeting, Marquette University’s Women Studies Conference, and at The Darkwater Women in Music Festival. The world authority on Albrecht Mendelssohn’s musical oeuvre, Eva’s research was supported by a fellowship by the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz, and her article on Albrecht Mendelssohn’s vocal works was published in Mendelssohn-Studien, volume 19. Her scholarly edition of Albrecht Mendelssohn’s “Songs for Lena” was published by A-R Editions in March 2024 and has been nominated for the Claude V. Palisca Award.
Closer to home, Eva appears with Trio ToUché, a piano ensemble for 3 pianists/6 hands at one piano and has performed as a fortepianist with Pro Musica Rara. She can also be heard on WBJC 91.5FM’s radio shows Face the Music and Music in Maryland with host Jonathan Palevsky.
Eva Mengelkoch studied at the Folkwang University for the Arts with Michael Roll and received her master’s and doctoral degrees at Indiana University as a student of Schnabel-pupil Leonard Hokanson (piano) and Elisabeth Wright (fortepiano). Since 2022, she has worked intensively with Hans Peter Blochwitz on the interpretation of the Lied repertory. Eva was a fellow with Villa Music, The Banff Centre for the Arts, Denkmalschmiede Hoefgen, and Schloss Wiepersdorf. She is Professor of Music (piano) at Towson University in Baltimore.
